Sa 15 March 2014 - Las Vegas to Zion National Park

Picking up the BMW rental from BMW Motorad - Conatact Details below - at 09:00 heading back to "The Element" hotel in Summerlin to pack tha basics for a night out.

Hit the road at 10:30 driving on the 215 South through Henderson and enter the Lake Mead State Park. Riding along the scenic 169 joining the Interstate 15 heading North-East towards St George. After refueling (the R1200GS does not have the range I am used to in the Adventure) continuing journey making a right on Highway 9 to Springdale. Just before entering Springdale you pass "Majestic View Lodge" and true to it name - the VIEW IS MAJESTIC - see pictures below...

It was obviously a weekend as the streets were packed with people and cars. Just out of Springdale you enter the Zion National Park. Entry fee of $12 per motorcyle and entry is valid for a week.

Passing the visitor centre and camp site you cross a bridge over the Zion river - see photos below... The bridge draw thousands of photographers every year, as this YouTube video shows -

Just after the bridge you turn left into the Zion Canyon or you can continue on the road leading to the "Zion Mount Carmel Tunnel". Construction of the 1.1 mile Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel began in the late 1920's and was completed in 1930. At the time that the tunnel was dedicated, on July 4, 1930, it was the longest tunnel of it's type in the United States. The purpose of the building the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel (and the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway) was to create direct access to Bryce Canyon and Grand Canyon from Zion National Park.

I booked a cabin (524) at the Zion Lodge (Gov Park website) situated in ZIon Canyon, which is a view miles up the road from Zion River bridge, but decided to drive the scenic route up Zion canyon before checking in at around 16:30.

Zion canyon has the most awesome rock formations towering up into the sky on both sides on the snaking river Zion. You can drive up to the Temple of Sinawava.
